We finally have air-conditioning! In all the years since the Crow’s Nest was built, it never had built in air-conditioning. We are so excited that we can now control the temperature of the house in the summer and I am so happy that I do not have to put in heavy window units all over the house and keep the ceiling fans running 24/7.
However the Crow’s Nest was built with cooling in mind. It was something Sara and I noticed in the first few weeks of moving into the house. Sara was moping up the floors and had opened all the windows while I was painting and we noticed how fast the paint and the floors were drying. Turns out the house has amazing cross ventilation and helps cool the house. Upstairs it is much of the same story, amazing cross ventilation.
I also realized that the enclosed front porch has amazing cross ventilation as well. I imagine that when the porch was enclosed in the 1920s-1930s that it was very nice to sit out here and that without the newer houses across the street that the porch had an unobstructed view of the Fox River. Sigh, with progress comes development and we can only see the river in winter when there are no leaves on the trees.
Anyway thank goodness for progress in technology and that we don’t have to die of heat this summer.
